Paramedic Education Program

Introduction

Paramedic interns who enroll in Pro EMS Center for MEDICS must be motivated by a desire to be future leaders in EMS.

The ethos of the Center for MEDICS is that the patient's interest is paramount in clinical teaching and paramedical practice. Throughout the paramedic program, significant emphasis is placed on the intersection of teamwork, leadership, communications skills, and subject knowledge.

The curriculum is outcome-focused and integrated with formative clinical and field experiences. It is designed to give students a sound knowledge of both the science and the practice of pre-hospital emergency medicine.

Paramedic interns are exposed to a wide variety of patient populations, and encouraged to develop a balanced perspective of home, community, hospital and pre-hospital care. The clinical and field sites affiliated with the Center for MEDICS paramedic program, combined with the expertise and dedication of the clinical preceptors, ensure that our interns receive instruction of the highest standard.

The Center for MEDICS employs a physician medical director whose primary responsibility is to provide guidance, leadership, oversight and quality assurance for our EMS educational programs. The medical director also delivers approximately 70 hours of didactic and practical instruction to each paramedic class.

The Center for MEDICS works very closely with the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medical Residency program at Massachusetts General Hospital. During the course of each paramedic class, approximately 10 emergency medicine and trauma surgery senior residents deliver about 100 hours of physician-led instruction.

The diversity and volume of physician interaction in our Paramedic Program helps to equip our students with the clinical, behavioral and critical thinking skills needed to render high quality healthcare to all patients, in any setting.

The collegiate relationships developed between individual physicians and our students provide additional mentoring opportunities, and instill in our students the habits of lifelong learning.
