Pro EMS Center for MEDICS Conducts Embedded Simulation Training for Cambridge Health Alliance Anesthesia Staff Using State-of-the-Art Patient Simulators, the First-of-Its Kind in New England
Conducted at CHA's Cambridge Hospital campus , the ACLS Recertification class brought lifelike mannequins into a live operating room to recreate challenging patient cases.
Cambridge, MA, February 2011 - Pro EMS Center for MEDICS conducted its first simulation training for anesthesia emergencies using lifelike mannequins in a live operating room at Cambridge Health Alliance's Cambridge Hospital campus. Experienced anesthesiologists and surgeons from Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) attended the "embedded simulation" as part of a new and unique ACLS recertification class designed and run by Center for MEDICS instructors, a first of its kind in New England.
Center for MEDICS staff were invited by CHA, which consists of the Cambridge Hospital, Somerville Hospital, and Whidden Hospital (Everett) campuses, to conduct the class, and worked closely with the Chairman of Anesthesiology to select challenging anesthesia cases from the hospital's case history. Center for MEDICS Director Chris Kerley and Paramedic Instructor Danielle Thomas recreated the selected anesthesia emergencies in the operating room using Center for MEDICS' proven state-of-the-art simulation technology. The anesthesiologists and surgeons responded to these situations, creating a realistic educational environment that fosters better learning and higher skills retention.
"This kind of hands-on, experiential learning using the advanced patient simulators is a huge step forward," says Kerley. "It's more realistic, informative, and incredibly engaging."
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) is usually taught in a traditional classroom setting, with the instructor and students using slides to review the material. The unique, embedded simulation approach designed by Center for MEDICS aims to encourage students to expand their decision-making and teamwork behaviors, in addition to learning and retaining basic skills, so that they are better equipped to handle technically challenging situations. CFM's approach is highly interactive, with clinicians using their own medical equipment in their own working environment, and then undergoing detailed debriefings after each simulation.
This novel approach also helps to improve the safety of patients in the operating room because clinicians are better able to practice managing uncommon clinical events, such as resuscitation, without placing patients at risk.
Pro EMS Center for MEDICS and CHA are planning several more anesthesia and surgical simulations this year, including pediatric and neonatal surgical emergencies.
