Course Description
The education of an emergency medical technician involves both classroom lectures and practical skill sessions. It prepares the student to sit for the Massachusetts state written and practical tests. Certification and experience as an EMT is essential before progressing to more advanced levels, such as intermediate and paramedic.
Classroom lectures cover a wide variety of subjects, including human anatomy and physiology, illness and injury, ambulance operations, and patient assessment. Practical sessions teach essential "hands-on" skills, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation with semi-automatic external defibrillators, c-spine immobilization, oxygen administration, and fracture splinting.
Once certified, the EMT provides basic life saving and supporting care to patients suffering from medical or traumatic emergencies in the pre-hospital or ambulance setting.
Bob Doyle is the principal instructor of the EMT course. He has functioned in this capacity at Northeastern University's EMT program for the past 30 years, and brings a variety of experiences and knowledge to the Center for MEDICS program.
